Online fantasy sports and mobile apps have become allowed for people in North Carolina.

Legalities of Sports Betting North Carolina

Before recent, the North Carolina state had been mostly anti-gambling for citizens. Today you can watch your favourite team play and bet on that same team and potentially get some cash for your betting win.

This is allowed, as long as wagering takes place at the states two tribal casinos and/or through offshore online sportsbooks. Bettors must place wagers at facilities located outside the state lines. However, if you are overseas the law does not prohibit individuals from placing sports bets on the internet. North Carolina laws says casinos can only operate on Cherokee tribal lands. Unless a game falls under a bingo or raffle format, skills are a requirement for electronic games.  Slot games that hold reels and re-spin features require the use of rock and roll formats. Mobile betting has not yet been fully addressed in the legislature but remains a close possibility. Lawmakers are slowly coming around to the idea of legal sports betting.

When will Sports Betting be legal in North Carolina?

The bill signed by Roy Cooper has assisted the process of legalising wagering in the state’s two tribal casinos. This ruling made in the Supreme Court’s May 2018 ruling has overturned the federal ban on sports betting outside of the Nevada. Subsequently after that ruling, we’ve seen states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, New Hampshire, Arkansas, New Jersey, New Mexico, Mississippi, Montana, etc make the move.

North Carolina will allow bettors to wager on collegiate sporting events involving teams from the state, nothing like most other states.  Please bear in mind that North Carolina has a minimum gambling age of 21 years old for charity gaming and lottery. Lottery and charity gaming do not have minimum age. However, 21 years old is the legal required gambling age in any North Carolina casino or at any new online casino.
